ABC’s broadcast of the 50th annual CMA Awards attracted an impressive 12.5 million viewers on a night when other networks went with re-runs due to Fox broadcasting some sporting event.
That competition was, of course, Game 7 of the World Series won by the Chicago Cubs. The game pulled in 40.05m viewers in Nielsen’s final ratings. It was the most-watched World Series game since the 1991 Game 7 Twins victory over the Braves.
The CMAs dipped from last year’s audience of 13.62m viewers, but that could be made up when final ratings are released later today or when the Live +3 Day tally is counted later in the week.
Furthermore, the CMA ceremony is likely to attract considerable online viewership thanks to Beyonce’s surprise appearance with the Dixie Chicks; star turns from Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Eric Church and others; the amazing opening segment featuring 10 minutes of country chestnuts; the wonderful Dolly Parton tribute and the Garth-Trisha medley.
