STAPLETON, ISBELL
TAKE TOP HONORS
AT AMERICANA
AWARDS SHOW

The incredible years of Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell continued Wednesday at the 15th Annual Americana Music Association Honors & Awards show, where Isbell received Album and Song of the Year trophies and Stapleton was named Artist of the Year.

“Thank you to all the Americana radio stations out there, it’s been a big part of what we’ve been doing,” Mercury Nashville’s Stapleton told the crowd at the Ryman Auditorium. “I’m nervous, there’s so many heroes out here in the audience and up here on the stage, this is a remarkable thing.”

Margo Price was named Emerging Artist of the Year; fiddler Sara Watkins was honored as Instrumentalist of the Year. Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell earned Group/Duo of the Year, their second win in the category.

Lifetime Achievement Awards went to Shawn Colvin (trailblazer), William Bell (songwriting), Bob Weir (performance), Jim Lauderdale (WagonMaster), Woody Guthrie (President’s Award), and Billy Bragg (Spirit of Americana/Free Speech In Music, co-presented by the First Amendment Center).

Weir helped open the show playing Merle Haggard’s classic “Mama Tried,” part of the tribute to recently departed musical giants including Allen Toussaint, Ralph Stanley and Guy Clark. Price, The Lumineers, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Steve Earle, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bell and George Strait also performed.
