AMOEBA STAYING PUT

The widely reported demise of Amoeba Records has been exaggerated. One of the fabled Hollywood record store’s owners and co-founder, Marc Weinstein, put the situation in perspective with a Facebook post.

“Years from now, this developer who has owned our building since last year, would like to build a new building on our site,” he wrote early this morning. “Until he gets any entitlements or permits, which will take 3-4 years, there's no chance of us going anywhere. After that, we hope to find a suitable location nearby, and definitely in Hollywood.”

Amoeba, which opened in November 2001, picked its location as something of an homage to Wallichs Music City, Hollywood’s major music emporium from the 1940s up into the mid-‘70s that was located at Sunset & Vine.

The website LAist reported Monday that a mixed-use, glass skyscraper would be built where people are now thumbing through LPs and trying get more than a quarter apiece for their mid-‘90s CD collections. Amoeba scribbled a statement on Twitter as well about their future in Hollywood. (See below).

Real estate group GPI Companies, which has built major shopping malls, acquired the building in October 2015. If it builds a large tower it will have company: a 21-story hotel is expected to replace the Jack-in-the-Box across the street.

Clearly, these developers have never seen the movie Earthquake.
