AMAZON TUNING IN $5 STREAMING SERVICE?

Amazon is exploring a music subscription service that would cost half as much as Apple Music and Spotify—but there’s a catch. The listener has to use Amazon’s Echo speaker.

Recode reported that Amazon wants to offer two tiers of streaming service: An ad-free $10/month available anywhere on any device, and the Echo-only service that would run $4 or $5 a month.

The Echo is an internet-connected speaker powered by Alexa, the company’s AI software that was launched last year. They have reported that they have sold 1m units and project sales of 10m in 2017.

According to Recode’s story, Amazon wants to launch in September, but deals are not in place with publishers and labels. Amazon currently runs a video streaming service that is free to Amazon Prime members, but is $9 a month otherwise. It has limited music offerings.
