ED VERSUS ED

Ed Sheeran has been accused of copying elements of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" for his own smash, "Thinking Out Loud." An infringement lawsuit has been filed by Ed Townsend, who composed and co-penned the Gaye classic in '73.

“The defendants copied the ‘heart’ of ‘Let’s’ and repeated it continuously throughout Thinking,” the lawsuit apparently said. “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of 'Thinking' are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of ‘Let’s.’”

If you recall, in March of 2015, the Gaye family was awarded $7.4m when an eight-person jury found that Robin Thicke's 2013 hit, "Blurred Lines," infringed on the copyright to Gaye's "Got to Give It Up." Of course, later that year, things got messier; following a request for a new trial from Thicke and Pharrell Williams’ lawyers, U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt ruled that the family had to cough up more than $2m of that $7.4m, but that 50% of future royalties on "Blurred Lines" would go to Gaye’s family.
