The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

With a whopping $135m—way more than what the rest of this weekend's Top 35 highest-grossing films earned combined—Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad came out on top. Although the film was torn to shreds by critics, resulting in a 26% Rotten Tomatoes score, it now holds the largest August opening weekend ever. That said, it'll be interesting to see how bad the second-week drop is.

Speaking of rough receptions, the next biggest bow belonged to EuropaCorps' Nine Lives, which stars Kevin Spacey as a talking cat and earned $6.5m to land at #6, but received a horrific 4% Rotten Tomatoes score.

1. Suicide Squad (Warner Bros.) $135m 4,255/$31,752 avg. (debut)
2. Jason Bourne (Universal) $23m 4,039/$5,623 avg. (week 2)
3. Bad Moms (STX) $14m 3,215/$4,418 avg. (week 2)
4. The Secret Life of Pets (Universal) $12m 3,417/$3,383 avg. (week 5)
5. Star Trek Beyond (Paramount) $10m 3,263/$3,126 avg. (week 3)
