ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER LOLLA

Chicago Festival Draws Around 400k Attendees For Newly Expanded Four-Day Schedule

The curtain has dropped on this year's Lollapalooza, which took place at Chicago's Grant Park for a 25th year to provide eight stages for 170+ acts. This, however, was the first year that the festival was extended to four days.

And although Day 1 was delayed by 40 minutes or so thanks to bad weather, the whole shebang turned out to be a pretty big success. Last year, the festival reached new heights, pulling in approximately 100k attendees a day for a weekend total of 300k. This year, with the added day, it has been reported that the event still managed to bring in around 100k a day; that makes 400k, ladies 'n' gents. And a whole lot of those are millennials; according to the Chicago Tribune, "about 40% of Lolla ticketbuyers are under the age of 25."

Word has it Lolla—promoted by C3 Presents—has every intention of continuing with a four-day schedule, too. (BTW, when Lolla started, it was two days and attracted about 67k fans)

As for this year's headliners, those included Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, LCD Soundsystem, Future, J. Cole, Major Lazer and Jane's Addiction.

Other key performers included Chris Stapleton, G-Eazy, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, Flume, Halsey, Bastille, The 1975, Alessia Cara, Foals, Leon Bridges, The Strumbellas and more.

And then there were those surprise highlights. Rage Against the Machine (and Prophets of Rage) guitarist Tom Morello joined X Ambassadors on stage for a performance of "Collide"—a collaboration between the artists. In Morello's typically outspoken fashion, he had the words "NOBODY FOR PRESIDENT" plastered on the back of his axe and "ARM THE HOMELESS" on the front. Morello also joined Jane's Addiction for a performance of Nothing's Shocking's "Mountain Song." For the Perry Farrell-fronted band's last song, though, Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin lent a hand (or two) to close with "Jane Says."

"Cold Water" collaborators , Diplo and Major Lazer also made sure to come together for a memorable moment. Of course, the Biebs, who is set to continue his Purpose World Tour in Japan on 8/13, was nowhere to be found.

Chicago native Chance the Rapper, who's currently at the center of lots of Grammy buzz, popped up to throw down with Flosstradamus for the former's "Summer Friends"—off this year's acclaimed release, Coloring Book.

Fans can thank Samsung for a lot of the fest faves. The company's Samsung Stage provided the platform for an array of talked-about sets (i.e. Radiohead, Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, LCD Soundsystem, et al). Samsung was also the force behind the immersive opportunities found via hangout hotspot The Galaxy Lounge and VR-Palooza. The latter is officially being described as, "an interactive and entertaining VR experience where festival-goers can livestream performances from the Samsung Stage using Samsung Gear VR and participate in all-new 360-degree VR experiences, including 4D VR surfing in Tahiti, skateboarding in Malibu, roller coaster and hot air balloon."

Now, please excuse us while we try and get our hands on some of that gear, as well as some potent herb, so we can truly enjoy snowboarding down a roller coaster in Tahiti with Anthony Kiedis and Thom Yorke.
