U.K. CHARTS: BIFFY CLYRO DEBUTS AT #1

Scottish band Biffy Clyro have continued the strong midweek lead and scored their second #1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart with Ellipses (Atlantic) shifting 37k combined sales. Over on the Singles Top 5, there are finally two fresh entries.

Ellipses is the Clyro’s seventh album, and follows the chart-topping Opposites in 2013. Elsewhere, Adele, Coldplayand ELO are still enjoying a post-Glasto bump with 25 (XL) at #2, A Head Full of Dreams (Parlophone) at #4 and All Over the World (RCA) at #5.

Drake’s Views From the 6 (Island) is up three places to #3 at albums, and he's still #1 on the Official Singles Chart with “One Dance,” now tallying 14 consecutive weeks. If the track stays at the top for more than 16 weeks, it will steal the longest consecutive #1 crown from Bryan Adams’ ’91 hit “Everything I Do (I Do It For You).”

There’s been lots of talk about the stagnancy of the singles chart recently, but two fairly new tracks are shaking that up. “This Girl” (3 Beat) by Kungs vs Cookin’ on 3 Burners has been Drake’s closest competitor for four weeks, but has now dropped to #5. In its place is The Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down” f/Daya (Sony), that has moved five places since Friday to #2. It’s on high rotation at BBC Radio 1 and Global’s Capital FM, and is moving up the Radiomonitor charts at #18 from #47 this rolling week.

The second entry hitting a promising peak is “Perfect Strangers” (Virgin EMI) by Jonas Blue f/t JP Cooper. The single has leapt 13 places to #3 with broad support across playlists and radio.

Another entry from Ted Cockle’s Virgin EMI that’s also rising fast is a cover of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” by new signing Calum Scott. It has already sold more than 100k worldwide and has been steadily climbing the chart for 12 weeks.
