iTUNES AND APPLE MUSIC TOP TRACKS: A TALE OF TWO GROUPS

Sony continues to dominate the iTunes singles leaderboard, with seven of the Top 10 tracks (and six of the Top Seven). Calvin Harris, Adele and The Chainsmokers give Columbia three, while RCA boasts longtime chart-topper Justin Timberlake and Sia’s new breakout and Epic has the J.Lo-Lin-Manuel Miranda charity smash and Meghan Trainor’s “Me Too.” The two UMG cuts belong to Republic: Drake and James Bay.

On the streaming side it’s almost the exact opposite story, with YMCMB/Republic’s streaming colossus Drake holding five of the Apple Music Top 10 while two fellow UMG acts, Westbury Road/Roc Nation’s Rihanna and TDE/Interscope’s ScHoolboy Q, have one spot apiece; We the Best/Epic’s DJ Khaled represents for Sony with two cuts (one featuring Drake). Will the long tail of streaming cause the current top sellers to become tomorrow’s top streamers? Will Urban artists retain their stranglehold on streaming indefinitely? Stay tuned.
