PUBLISHERS WIN BIG IN SYNC

Publishers in Blighty are enjoying a purple patch in revenue derived from sync and licensing, which reached £52m in 2015—more than twice that received by record labels.

Jane Dyball, CEO of the Music Publishers Association, revealed the numbers at the organisation's AGM in London. Other headline stats include a rise to £3m+ for the new business of licensing the copying of printed music, and, as revealed by UK Music last year, A&R investment by British publishers has equaled the amount spent by British record labels, an all-time high.

Dyball addressed the issue du jour —Brexit—pleading with the British government to “be gentle” when deciding how to govern businesses, but ending with a vote of confidence.

“To the European Commission, with whom we have had a love-hate relationship, we say ‘you haven’t seen the last of us—everything you do affects our truly international business.’ To those governing us in the U.K., we say ‘we have adapted our businesses wholesale over the past 40 years and are true Europeans. It will be hard and expensive for us to dismantle our world.’

“To the marketplace we say ‘we are a business ready willing and able to adapt.’ Our business continues to evolve. I myself have learned something new every day for the past 30 years. I think that’s another way of admitting that I am making it up as I go along.

"Are we scared of the future? Yes. Should we be? Perhaps. But there are a whole generation of people who are not scared and who are entering our business not reluctantly but with an eye to an opportunity. Not because they think it is dead in the water, but because they see a way of perhaps doing it differently."

Amen sister.
