VETERAN ROCKCRIT NEEDS HELPING HAND

Super-flack Cary Baker has reached out in an effort to help a friend in dire need—a guy whose work we’ve been reading for decades—music-journo Scott Schinder, a good guy and a total pro. What follows is Cary’s message in full.

Our dear friend and music critic extraordinaire, Scott Schinder, was admitted to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center on Friday, June 17. He’s suffering from a kidney-related problem and, while he is in stable condition and is slowly improving, he’s not leaving any time soon.

Many of you know Scott from his music and popular culture writings for various publications in the U.S. and overseas, including Rolling Stone, Creem, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, Time Out New York, Newsday, Stereophile, Musician, Tower Pulse, New Musical Express, Melody Maker and Texas Music Magazine. He's also written several music-related books and liner notes for numerous CD reissues and box sets and has contributed essays and other pieces to many other books, including all six editions of The Trouser Press Record Guide.

This visit to the hospital was unplanned and like many music journalists, Scott is a freelancer. He’s covered under the Affordable Care Act, but there are many bills that are not getting paid in the interim (rent, utilities, kitty cat food) and there are definitely going to be bills down the line from this hospital stay. We’ve set the goal at a reachable amount, but anything that comes in above and beyond that will certainly help Scott get back on his feet and ahead of the game after what we hope will be a minor health set back.

We hope you will join us in our effort to help Scott get well and remove some of the financial worries that come from an unexpected and somewhat lengthy hospital stay.
