JOHN BERRY,
1962-2016

John Berry, an original member of The Beastie Boys, died Thursday at a hospice in Danvers, Mass. He was 52.

Berry, credited with coming up with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group’s name, suffered from frontal lobe dementia, according to multiple reports.

Berry attended the Walden School in New York City with Mike Diamond and formed the a hardcore punk band The Young Aborigines. In July 1981, they added Adam Yauch and Kate Schellenbach.

A guitarist, Berry played on the Beastie Boys' first seven-inch EP, Polly Wog Stew, and left the band soon after that recording was made in late 1982. Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) replaced Berry and Schellenbach. Berry went on to join the bands Even Worse, Big Fat Love, Highway Stars and Bourbon Deluxe.
