HAMILTON MAKES TONY HISTORY

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s phenomenon of a Broadway musical, Hamilton, has received a fittingly historic 16 Tony nominations. These include Best New Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Musical (Miranda facing off against co-star Leslie Odom Jr. here), Best Actress in a Musical, Actor and Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design… jeez, just check out all the nominations here.

Miranda, his shelves already groaning with Grammy, Pulitzer, MacArthur and other trophies and prizes, has had a profound impact on the culture. Not only is Hamilton the hottest ticket in modern memory, but it has received some very lavish praise from some very lavish people. Michelle Obama, for example, called it “the best piece of art in any form that I have ever seen in my life.” So, you know, no big whoop. Oh, and Alexander Hamilton (sing it with us) gets to stay on the $10 bill largely because of the show’s influence. Yeah, dude's still influencing monetary policy.

Also nominated for Musical are Bright Star, School of Rock – The Musical, Shuffle Along, or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed and Waitress. Shuffle Along received an impressive 10 nominations, also including Book, Actor (Brandon Victor Dixon), Actress (Adrienne Warren), Direction, Choreography, Scenic Design, Costume Design and Lighting Design.

Some of the other notable nominees on the musical side include singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles, who penned the songs for the musical Waitress, Steve Martin for Bright Star and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes for the book of School of Rock (with songs co-written by Andrew Lloyd Webber).

Dramatic nominees include Gabriel Byrne and Jessica Lange for Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams for Blackbird, Frank Langella for The Father, Laurie Metcalf for Misery and Lupita Nyong’o for Eclipsed (which was penned by Walking Dead star Danai Gurira).

Eclipsed, The Father, The Humans and King Charles III got nods for Best Play; The Color Purple, Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me and Spring Awakening are the nominees for Best Revival of a Musical.

The Tonys will be broadcast on 6/12 from NYC’s Beacon Theatre. We’ll bet you a ten spot we know who the big winner will be.
