ALIBABA EXPANDS STREAMING BIZ

Alibaba  Music  is  eyeing  a  late  2016  launch  of  an  English-language  version  of  its  music  streaming  service  Alibaba  Planet  that  the  Chinese  company  launched  4/15  in  China.

Led  by  three  established  Chinese  music -industry  heavyweights,  Alibaba  Planet  is  an  online  platform  that  allows  fans  to  connect  with  musical  acts,  watch  live  shows  and  purchase  merchandise,  a  first  of  its  kind  in  the  country.  The  app  also  has  a  B2B  element  that  allows  members  of  the  music  industry  to  register  as  a  merchant  and  sell  services  or  products  to  individual  users  or  corporate  clients.

Established  in  2015  last  year  as  part  of  the  e-commerce  behemoth’s  expansion  into  digital  entertainment,  Alibaba  Music  has  rights  agreements  with  Universal  Music  Group  and  BMG  in  addition  to  multiple  Chinese  music  companies. 

Alibaba  Music  CEO  Song  Ke  said  of  Alibaba  Planet  is  key  to  the  company’s  plan    “to  become  the    world’s  largest  Internet-based  music  company,  and  to  build  up  the  commerce  landscape  for  the  global  music  and  entertainment  industry.  Alibaba  Planet  amplifies  interaction  among  stars,  users  and  merchants,  creating  more  business  opportunities  and  delivering  more  entertainment  offerings.” 

Alibaba  Planet  is  an  upgrade  of  it  mobile  music  player  app  TTPOD,  which  the  company  purchased  in  in  2013,  the  same  year  it  acquired  music  service  provider  Xiami.
