SIMON BARNABAS EXITS SONY U.K. FOR UMTV ROLE

The Sony/Universal exec turntable in Britain continues as longtime Sony Music exec Simon Barnabas jumps ship to Universal Music U.K., where he'll serve as Managing Director of its UMTV division. UMTV's chief Adam Corke has been promoted to a new international role as VP Commercial Affairs.

Barnabas leaves his post as Marketing Director at Sony, where he spent 16 years. In his new role, Barnabas will report to Universal Music U.K. chairman and CEO David Joseph, while Corke reports to UMG SVP Commercial Affairs Ross Foster.

The appointment comes as Universal Music intends to strengthen its position in the compilations business, building playlist brands and successful artist projects.

Barnabas has personally curated a run of chart-topping compilations which have between them sold over 4.5 million copies. Beyond compilations, he has overseen #1s for artists including George Michael, Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Clarkson, Anastacia and Usher. He is perhaps best known for steering the marketing for Michael Jackson on numerous multi-platinum projects since 2002.

Discussing his new job, Barnabas said: "I feel truly honoured to be joining David and the executives at Universal Music, the world's number one record company with the biggest and greatest catalogue. The countless creative opportunities ahead are truly exhilarating, and I very much look forward to working with the team towards shaping the future of the commercial business."

Joseph added: “Simon’s energy and innovation will lead the outstanding team at UMTV to even greater success with streaming playlists, visionary brand deals, unique artist projects and targeted compilation releases. I am delighted he is joining us and would also like to thank Adam for an exceptional job in kick-starting the evolution of the label and wish him all the best in his new international role.”
