GNR 2016: NO LAWYERS, GUNS N' A WHOLE LOTTA MONEY

The Guns N’ Roses reboot—don’t call it a reunion—is being rolled out incrementally, a prudent strategy considering the long-feuding group’s volatility.

The rollout began with a couple of shakedown runs—the first a 4/1 surprise show at the Troubadour, during which Axl Rose fractured his foot—the second a pair of arena performances last Friday and Saturday night at Las Vegas’s brand-spanking-new 20k-capacity T-Mobile Arena (a JV between tour promoter AEG and MGM Resorts International). For the Vegas dates, Rose was seated in the same so-called “rock throne” used onstage by Dave Grohl after he broke his leg last year. The consensus among fans and reviewers: So far, so good. Indeed, mass quantities of goat are being thrown so far.

The next step for original members Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, accompanied by high-end hired hands, comprises headlining sets at Coachella during the next two weekends, each paying the principal bandmembers a reported $4m—the same humongous amount AC/DC pocketed a year ago for playing the fest. From there, GNR heads south of the border for a pair of shows in Mexico City, each expected to draw 100k.

The tour proper—which has been dubbed the Not in This Lifetime tour (in the spirit of the Eagles' reunion jaunt)—will hit 20 stadiums over two months at around $3m a pop. Yep, that’s $60m, with the possibility of additional dates being added.

At this point, another meltdown between Axl and Slash would result in a mountain of cash being left on the table. We suspect they’ll find a way to get along, at least until Labor Day.
