NEW MUSIC FRIDAY ARRIVES IN BLIGHTY

Radio 1 & 1Xtra Head of Music Chris Price has revealed that, from here on out, every Friday will be New Music Friday in an attempt to "recognise the industry's new global release day, as well as to satisfy what we think is our listeners' growing impatience to hear new music in an onair/on-sale world."

Price also explained that they're rearranging their programming cycle so that it's in sync with the chart week. Thusly, they’ll refresh station playlists on Friday mornings—as opposed to Mondays—the Radio 1 playlist meeting will move from Monday to Tuesday afternoon and they’ll publish the new playlist every Tuesday at 5pm, while the 1Xtra playlist will move to Wednesday.

On Monday in Paris, I announced that, starting on April 8, every Friday on Radio 1 and 1Xtra will become New Music Friday. We’re doing this both to recognise the industry’s new global release day, as well as to satisfy what we think is our listeners’ growing impatience to hear new music in an onair/on-sale world.

Every Friday we’ll be celebrating that week’s most exciting new releases and playlist additions with New Music Friday features in our daytime and evening shows. With your help, we also hope to feature ‘special deliveries,’ where artists bring their newest tunes into Radio 1 to share with our listeners for the first time, much like Annie Mac’s, but across all relevant shows.

Moving our programming cycle into line with the chart week, we’ll refresh our station playlists on a Friday morning rather than Monday, as they are now. This means that the Radio 1 playlist meeting will move forward a day to Tuesday afternoon. We’ll publish the new playlist to the industry every Tuesday at 5pm. The 1Xtra playlist moves to Wednesday.

As we’ll be featuring some tunes from the moment they hit streaming services and download stores, it’s important you give us plenty of advance notice of when things will become available on-air/onsale. Our first New Music Friday will be April 8. If you’re making important new music available on that day, do let us know—we want to make a splash!

The first Tuesday playlist meeting takes place on April 5. The Radio 1 and 1Xtra appointments schedules will change as a result; Ty Powell will be in touch soon with details. We understand that this affects how you work; we’ll do our best to minimise disruption, welcome your feedback and thank you for your patience.

New Music Friday is a celebration. New music is the lifeblood of Radio 1 and 1Xtra; it makes us and our listeners feel good, just like Fridays do. We really want our friends in the music industry to join in the fun. Thanks in advance for being part of it.
