KEITH EMERSON,
1944-2016

Keith Emerson, the virtuoso British keyboardist best known for fronting the progressive-rock trio Emerson, Lake & Palmer, has died, according to a Facebook post from his manager. He was 71.

Emerson reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

ELP was among a handful of bands who shaped the "prog" sound, mixing classical, jazz and avant-garde influences into the band's complex brew on seminal recordings like Brain Salad Surgery and Tarkus. He was also a trailblazer in the use of synthesizers in a rock setting. The trio (with bassist-guitarist-frontman Greg Lake and drummer Carl Palmer) reigned from 1970-79, reuniting twice in the '90s to release new material and tour.

In addition to what he brought to the table musically, Emerson was a true showman and rock star, bringing the keys into the limelight—even jumping atop his Hammond organ, tipping it over and stabbing it with knives, as he did at a famed Belgium performance.

Prior to that, the Yorkshire-born Emerson fronted prog progenitors The Nice, among other forward-looking bands.

Emerson, who also scored several films, was slated to tour Japan next month.

Palmer released the following statement:

It is with profound sadness I have to report the death of Keith Emerson last night in Santa Monica, CA. Below is the official statement from Carl Palmer:

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and brother-in-music, Keith Emerson. Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come. He was a pioneer and an innovator whose musical genius touched all of us in the worlds of rock, classical and jazz. I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humor, compelling showmanship, and dedication to his musical craft. I am very lucky to have known him and to have made the music we did, together. Rest in peace, Keith.
