OSCARS: THE SHORT VERSION

Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes took Best Oriiginal Song at Sunday night's Oscar ceremony, while the Amy Winehouse doc Amy (with thanks to David Joseph and Lucian Grainge) took home the Documentary Feature honors. Ennio Morricone earned the Original Score statuette for The Hateful Eight. Smith, The Weeknd and Lady Gaga turned in very strong vocal performances.

Smith, Amy and the Morricone ST are all from UMG U.K. Credit goes to Joseph (who led the effort to bring Amy to the screen) Nick Raphael and Jo Charrington (who signed Smith) on the big night. Smith's Bond theme is #14 at iTunes early Monday morning, while the powerful anthem sung by Gaga has moved into the Top 10; The Weeknd holds #16 on the album chart.

Host Chris Rock offered some trenchant (and occasionally clearly uncomfortable) commentary on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, noting that Hollywood racism is the "nice" kind and overseeing some sketches injecting the issue into top Hollywood films. He also interviewed black moviegoers who had never heard of most of the nominated features—a telling sequence indeed.

Oh, and Spotlight took Best Picture, in case you're interested. Go here for our in-depth recap. For a complete list of winners, go here.
