A source who was backstage during the Grammys recounts Lauryn Hill’s no-show at the live telecast after doing dress rehearsal on Sunday.

“She got stuck in traffic coming back to Staples to perform on the show. Her manager lost it backstage, demanding that Ken Ehrlich change the running order of the show to accommodate her, which obviously couldn't be done at the last minute. Ken was already scrambling after finding out Rihanna had canceled because she’d come down with bronchitis. 

"That put Abel in the challenging position of having to do the slow-tempo second song [‘In the Night’] by himself at the last minute, which was not ideal—but he’s a pro and he made the most of it. And that's after the label chartered a private jet for her and spent big money on show production. Ken wasn’t the only one who was pissed off.”

Apparently there were no hard feelings, because during The Weeknd’s Friday night performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Hill made a surprise appearance, joining him on “In the Night” in a re-creation of the Grammy hookup that didn’t happen, approximating what Ehrlich had in mind to begin with.
