Fox's Kung Fu Panda 3 was the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office this weekend, earning $41m and scoring the largest January opening for an animated feature ever.
Buena Vista's The Finest Hours—based on the true story of a remarkable small-boat rescue mission performed by the U.S. Coast Guard—came in at #4, earning $10m as well as an A- CinemaScore, but fell short of its $80m budget.
1. Kung Fu Panda 3 (Fox) $41m 3,955/$10,367 avg. (debut)
2. The Revenant (Fox) $12m 3,330/$3,724 avg. (week 6)
3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Buena Vista) $11m 2,556/$4,218 avg. (week 7)
4. The Finest Hours (Buena Vista) $10m 3,143/$3,286 avg. (debut)
5. Ride Along 2 (Universal) $8m 2,412/$3,460 avg. (week 3)
The 2016 Oscar Nominated Shorts—released through ShortsHD and Magnolia Pictures—also debuted this weekend, boasting an impressive $505k from just 112 theaters with a $4,509 per theater average. That's the best release the compilations have seen so far. That being said, a film stitching together the most "oh my god" moments from this year's Republican debates would surely prove to be a true blockbuster.
