BOWIE'S BRITISH BOON

As the David Bowie sales frenzy heats up worldwide following the legendary star’s death, 14 of his albums and nine singles have made it into today’s Official Chart sales flash in Blighty.

Bowie’s swan song, Blackstar (RCA/Columbia), has racked up just under 90k sales since Friday to midnight GMT yesterday, doubling its figures since the sad news surfaced Sunday night. There’s no doubt it will top the 94k its predecessor, The Next Day, did in its first week on sale in 2013.

Six other Bowie albums are currently in the U.K.’s Top 40, with 2014’s compilation Nothing Has Changed at #7, The Best of David Bowie 1969/1974 at #13 and 2002’s Best of Bowie at #27.

His 1972 alter ego breakthrough album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, currently rests at #19, its predecessor and debut on RCA, 1972’s Hunky Dory, is at #20, and Bowie's first ever U.K. #1 album, 1973’s Aladdin Sane, sits at #32. A further seven of his seminal releases feature inside the Top 100.

On the Official Singles side of the story, Bowie has nine entries in the Top 100. The three that sit inside the Top 40 are 1977’s Brian Eno collaboration “Heroes” at #25 (which could beat its previous #24 peak by Friday), Hunky Dory’s only single “Life on Mars” at #34, and classic “Starman" at #35.
