Scott Weiland was found dead Thursday night on his tour bus in Minnesota, a source told TMZ. His wife, photographer Jamie Weiland, and manager Tom Vitorino confirmed his death to the L.A. Times. The cause of death was not immediately available, but 48-year-old frontman had famously struggled with addiction for years.
A statement on Weiland's Facebook page posted around 10pm said the singer had "passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minn. At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott's family be respected."
Reports of Weiland's death began to circulate after his friend Dave Navarro tweeted, "Just learned our friend Scott Weiland has died. So gutted, I am thinking of his family tonight."
Weiland was on tour with his current band, Scott Weiland & the Wildabouts.
On Friday morning Recording Academy topper Neil Portnow paid tribute to Weiland, describing him as “a grunge icon and a true modern-day rock & roll frontman. From the massive success he achieved as the original lead vocalist of Stone Temple Pilots to his work with rock supergroup Velvet Revolver and his most recent venture with the Wildabouts, Scott’s extraordinary talent and captivating performances will forever live on and inspire legions of rock fans worldwide. We have lost an innovative member of our creative community, and our sincerest condolences go out to Scott’s family, friends, collaborators and all who have been impacted by his incredible work.”
