THIS CHART STORY
HAS PURPOSE

Def Jam’s Justin Bieber is this week’s sales champ, prevailing over SYCO/Columbia’s One Direction, as his Purpose tops the HITS Album Sales Chart with 504k and the Sales Plus Streaming (SPS) Chart with 620k. FYI, those numbers signify the biggest debut of 2015 (in both categories)—until next week—as well as the biggest sales-plus-streaming number ever.

Hats off to manager Scooter Braun for running one of the most impressive campaigns in recent memory.

1D’s Made in the AM certainly put up a good fight. The two releases traded the lead until Bieber pulled away decisively over the weekend. Both titles overperformed hugely.

1D landed at #2 with 414k in sales, which bests 2014’s Four, and 470k at SPS.

For a more granular look at both titles, see below.

But back to Def Jam: Team Bartels is living it up, as three other Top 15 album-chart debuts garnish Bieber’s monster bow: Logic (#3, 110k), Jeezy (#4, 83k) and Alessia Cara (#12, 22k). Pass the Dom Pérignon, buddy.

In other sales news, RCA Nashville’s Chris Young bows at #5 with 57k, and Lava/Republic’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra (#6), RCA’s Kirk Franklin (#8), Columbia’s Electric Light Orchestra (#13) and WMG’s Ty Dolla Sign (#14) all make noise in album land.

RCA’s Pentatonix are once again poised to have the #1 yuletide album this season. 2014’s platinum-plus That’s Christmas to Me enjoys a strong sales bump this week, moving up to #11 with another 25k.

Streeting this week is Adele’s 25 (XL/Columbia). Could it score the biggest first week in recorded history? We’ll know soon.
