APPLE MUSIC MAKES ANDROID DEBUT (IN BETA)

Apple Music began its beta offering to Android device users today, with an offering designed to look and feel familiar to Android users. It is fundamentally the same as what users of iOS devices have been experiencing, with a few slight variations.

Android devices enjoy overwhelming marketshare worldwide, especially in Asia and parts of Europe, so this is a huge step for Apple in terms of global adoption. Will they be able to steal a substantial piece of Spotify's audience, as well as users of streaming-radio and other services? Stay tuned.

The app is available via the Google Play store, and of course, Google gets to keep 30% of the transaction. Given Apple's pocketing of an equal percentage for Spotify and other rival apps bought through its App Store, there's a certain symmetry.

"We’ve always wanted to do things for everyone when it came down to music," Apple's Eddy Cue told Techcrunch. "Part of that was letting you enjoy your music no matter where you were and what products you were using.”

A couple of differences: No videos yet, and users can't sign up for a family plan via the Android interface (though they can sign into an existing family plan). Stand by for updates on that front.
