1D VICTORS AT BEEB'S TEEN AWARDS

BBC Radio 1’s annual Teen Awards honored fan-girl favorites One Direction on Sunday, as pop’s most notorious rascal Justin Bieber (Virgim EMI) dropped in for a surprise appearance. 1D nabbed Best British Group and Best British Single for “Drag Me Down” (SYCO), voted for by Radio 1’s listeners.

Other victors included Atlantic U.K.'s Ed Sheeran, who took home Best British Artist for the second year running, while Simon Cowell’s X Factor was voted Best British TV Show.

YouTube prankster Joe Sugg is the Best British Vlogger, according to a host of millennials (his sister, Zoella, took the title last year), while Best Film is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

SYCO's Little Mix, Island's Nick Jonas, Capitol's 5 Seconds of Summer (whose Michael Clifford provided some unscripted entertainment after falling through a hole in the stage —don't worry, he's fine), Hopeless' All Time Low and Demi Lovato performed in front of an audience of 10k 14-17 year-olds at the SSE Wembley Arena. Bieber serenaded a screaming crowd with “Where Are Ü Now,” “Boyfriend” and “What Do You Mean?”

As well as providing teenage girls with an outlet for hysteria, the Teen Awards exist to celebrate youngsters that go above and beyond the call of duty in acts of kindness and courage. Teen Heroes this year included 14-year-old Alice—a carer from Gloucestershire—14-year-old Rosie—a fundraiser with a highly malignant primary brain tumour from Coventry—and 16-year-old Aaren from Bristol, who was born with gender dysphoria.
