SMITH'S LICENSE TO KILL AT RETAIL

Capitol Crooner Has First James Bond Song to Hit #1

Capitol’s Sam Smith has indeed scored an Official Charts record by becoming the first artist to reach #1 with a Bond theme. “Writing’s On The Wall” earned a combined chart sales and streams of 70k, finishing 13k ahead of nearest Def Jam competitor Justin Bieber with “What Do You Mean.”

Of the previous 23 Bond themes, those that came closest to hitting #1 were Adele’s “Skyfall” in 2012 and Duran Duran with “A View To Kill” in 1985.

“Writing’s On The Wall becomes Smith’s fifth #1 on the Official Singles Chart. The track’s full music video (the teaser of which was revealed on Wednesday) will be unveiled on 10/5 - which is, apparently, Global James Bond Day

Elsewhere in this week’s singles Top 5, Kemosabe/RCA’s R City and Adam Levine hold at #3 with “Locked Away”, former chart topper from Ministry Of Sound's Sigala “Easy Love” slips from #2 to #4, and The Weeknd’s Republic Records/XO “Can’t Feel My Face” remains at #5.

As expected, Island/PMR duo Disclosure have nabbed the top Official Albums spot with second LP Caracal. It’s their second #1 after hitting the top of the chart with their debut Settle in 2013. Caracal finished 8,000 copies ahead of nearest competitor, New Order’s Mute release Music Complete

At #2, it’s Manchester band New Order’s highest charting album in 22 years and their tenth Top 10.

Previous chart-topper David Gilmour’s Rattle That Lock slides two places to #3 this week, followed by Polydor’s Scottish synth-pop group CHVRCHES. The band’s second album, Every Open Eye, scores them a new peak at #4.

Warner act Jess Glynne is down two places to #5 today, with debut I Cry When I Laugh counting its sixth week in the Top 5.
