Study Says Managers Want Greater Transparency on Streaming Income

A new study commissioned by the U.K.’s Music Managers Forum finds that a majority of artist managers surveyed are primarily concerned with greater transparency in the disbursement of digital income. Dissecting the Digital Dollar, conducted for the MMF over a nine-month period by CMU Insights and due for publication on 10/13, consulted 50 artist managers and 30 digital-music types.

The study found when asked their main concern, 34% of respondents pointed to the need for better transparency in streaming and other digital income. 28% pointed to the need for changes in U.K. and U.S. laws that protect “safe harbors” online (i.e. piracy).

While an overwhelming majority called for “equitable remuneration” from digital revenues, few managers surveyed said they’d been briefed about how streaming income was parceled out, and Digital Dollar seeks to outline the contours of this accounting.
