Sony's Hotel Transylvania 2 was the highest grossing film in America this weekend, earning $48m and setting a new record for September opening weekend. It surpassed none other than its predecessor, which earned $42m in 2012.

Meanwhile, Well Go USA Entertainment's Lost in Hong Kong—the follow-up to 2012's Xu Zheng-directed Lost in Thailand—earned $20k across just 27 theaters in limited release.
