Sony's Hotel Transylvania 2 was the highest grossing film in America this weekend, earning $48m and setting a new record for September opening weekend. It surpassed none other than its predecessor, which earned $42m in 2012.

1. Hotel Transylvania 2 (Sony) $48m 3,754/$12,653 avg. (debut)
2. The Intern (Warner Bros.) $18m 3,305/$5,514 avg. (debut)
3. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (Fox) $14m 3,792/$3,692 avg. (week 2)
4. Everest (Universal) $13m 3,006/$4,355 avg. (week 2)
5. Black Mass (Warner Bros.) $12m 3,188/$3,610 avg. (week 2)

Meanwhile, Well Go USA Entertainment's Lost in Hong Kong—the follow-up to 2012's Xu Zheng-directed Lost in Thailand—earned $20k across just 27 theaters in limited release.
