WMG MOVES INTO MOVIE TERRITORY
Seeing the success of Universal's foray into music documentaries with the Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain biopics seems to have sparked the green-eyed monster in Warner Music, which has launched a U.K. production outfit, Unigram.
As reported by Screen Daily, the move has been made with the co-producer of music biz biopic Kill Your Friends, Gregor Cameron, and songwriter/short-lived President of Epic Records Amanda Ghost (who left the label after a public outburst over what she perceived to be bad sound at CMJ).
Warner Music owner Len Blavatnik's Access Industries has teamed with the duo to work on music-oriented film, TV and multimedia projects. Ghost said that alongside exploring existing catalogs, original music will be developed and produced utilizing "both marquee writers and producers in executive production roles, and a network of established songwriters to create musical content that will live inside and alongside the projects.”
Films in the works at the moment include a feature on the history of music app Shazam (with input from one of the app's founders, Dhiraj Mukherjee), as well as a present-day TV spin-off of Kill Your Friends.
