The Top 5 Grossing Films Over the Weekend Domestically

Can you feel it in the air? Minions mania is so strong that the Despicable Me spin-off snagged the top spot as the highest grossing film in America this weekend. Earning north of $115m, the furiously marketed animated feature raked in more than the rest of the Top 10 combined.

That number also marks the second biggest animation opening of all time, following 2004's Shrek 2. Add in the success of Jurassic World and Universal had the two leading flicks in the U.S. of A.

1. Minions (Universal) $115m 4,301/$26,784 avg. (debut)
2. Jurassic World (Universal) $18m 3,441/$5,260 avg. (week 5)
3. Inside Out (Buena Vista) $17m 3,644/$4,695 avg. (week 4)
4. Terminator: Genisys (Paramount) $14m 3,783/$3,621 avg. (week 2)
5. The Gallows (Warner Bros.) $10m 2,720/$3,682 avg. (debut)

Meanwhile, A24's Amy, Asif Kapadia's Amy Winehouse documentary, opened nationwide, drumming up a 700% increase with $1.8m or $5,220 across 341 theaters.
