APPLE PROBE:
DUELING STORIES
IN NYC PAPERS

While Apple was prepping its big reveal, the attorney generals…make that attorneys general…of New York and Connecticut were quietly investigating the tech giant’s negotiations with the majors in search of potential antitrust violations, Ben Sisario reported in the New York Times Tuesday afternoon.

But soon thereafter, on the New York Post site, Sisario counterpart Claire Atkinson advanced—and essentially countered—the Times story in a piece headlined “Universal not conspiring to kill music streaming: Schneiderman.” That in reference to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

UMG on Tuesday confirmed it was cooperating with the industrywide investigation, a continuing effort led by Schneiderman, and his Connecticut counterpart, George Jepsen.

Here’s Universal’s statement for the record:

“UMG shares the Attorneys General’s commitment to a robust and competitive market for music streaming services in the mutual best interest of consumers, artists, services and content companies alike – and we have a long track record to that effect. We are pleased to have provided the Attorneys General information demonstrating that conduct. It is our understanding that, given these representations, the Attorneys General have no present intention to make further inquiries of UMG in this regard.”

Jepsen said in a statement that his office was satisfied with Universal’s response, but added, “We will continue to monitor that market to ensure that consumers and competition are protected.”

The end of the probe is a setback for Spotify, which lobbied hard to kick-start the review, Atkinson wrote. The Connecticut probe was also closed.
