Universal's Pitch Perfect 2 had a box-office bow worth singing about, earning a solid $70m in its first weekend domestically. In doing so, the film has already surpassed the total gross to date of its predecessor and beaten that movie’s opening weekend numbers by $65m. Another debut, Warner Bros.' Mad Max, opened at #2 at the box office and earned a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It's also worth noting that A24's sci-fi drama Ex Machina is sitting pretty on the list of Top 10 grossing films as it continues to garner critical acclaim. At #9, the impressive underdog earned another $2.1m, bringing its total gross to $19.5m in its sixth week. The film was directed by novelist and 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland in his directorial debut.
