DRUGS GIVE ELLEN RED EYES

In one of the more unlikely bookings of the year, The War on Drugs, on the West Coast for Coachella, played Ellen on Monday. Turns out she’s a fan, so much so that she had the Adam Granduciel-led band perform a second song just for ellentube, a rare occurrence on the show. Along with the glorious “Red Eyes,” pereformed on an elaborate gilded set, TWOD played an Avalon-like compressed rendition of “Under the Pressure”; both songs are from 2014’s beloved Lost in the Dream (Secretly Canadian), an album so rooted in rock’s golden age that we could’ve put this item in our reissues section, Critics’ Choice.
