"CURATION" MAKES PUBLIC RADIO

Marketplace Story Analyzes the Making of Playlists

American Public Media series Marketplace aired a story about the business of playlist-making on streaming services, and the ascendancy of the human touch (aka "curation") over the algorithm.

In the story we meet staffers for streamery Songza (recently acquired by Google), who dive into the minute, data-crunching details of making a "Sweaty Sexy Workout Mix," among other playlists. Who knew deciding whether to take Britney or Mariah to spin class was such a technical matter?
