RECORD STORE DAY, REDUX: WATERLOO WINNERS

Storied Austin Shop Sees Best Sales Day Yet

Yesterday we offered you a bit of personal testimony from Record Store Day. It appears business was booming across the land, as evidenced by a report from Austin’s Waterloo Records.

2015 was “the best sales day ever in Waterloo’s 33+-year history,” up by 13% in sales, according to an open letter from proprietor John Kunz. Fortified by in-store signings, “RSD Crawl” discounts (show your receipt from another participating record store and get a discount), giveaways and goodies (including free beer), Waterloo saw folks lining up outside at 5pm that day before, and 270 in line by 7:30am (the store opened at 8).

Top sellers included specialty releases from the White Stripes, Courtney Barnett, The Doors, Mumford & Sons, Father John Misty, Grizzly Bear, Vampire Weekend, Built to Spill, Citizen Dick (the made-up Seattle band from Singles), Elvis Presley, Foo Fighters, Robert Plant and Otis Redding. 164 titles were sold out.

Vinyl sales were up 20% and CD sales up 22% at the store. Hallelujah.

"Great job, everyone, congrats to all," Kunz wrote.

Got intel from RSD? Pass it along.
