It took a key cutfrom the soundtrack of a smash movie, Furious 7, to unseat Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars from the top perch in what seems like forever, but that dang ol’ “Uptown Funk” was essentially flat in its 21st week as it continues its climb—this super-massive record is now north of 5.2m, and it ain’t done yet (see related story). Maroon 5’s “Sugar,” meanwhile, has just surpassed 2m.
This was also the weekend that The Weeknd jumped Ellie Goulding (and we mean that in the gentlest possible way) in the battle of 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack singles. Rihanna has nothing to bitch about as her latest manages an atypical week two gain of 22%. And the unanticipated Alt-to-Pop crossover hit “Shut Up + Dance” extended Walk the Moon’s stay on the big board to two weeks fully 28 weeks into its single life. Last time we looked, it was #2 at iTunes.
Interestingly, the biggest gainer of the next 10 tracks is Kelly Clarkson’s “Heartbeat Song,” whose pulse increased 95% three months into release, selling 69k and jumping #31-17. Hmmm… “Uptown Funk,” “Shut Up + Dance” and now “Heartbeat Song”—WTF have they been putting in Joe Riccitelli’s Italian roast this year?
