Insurgent Surges to #1; Three Films Debut in the Top 10

The second installment in the three-part Divergent series, Insurgent, snagged the #1 spot in the list of top grossing films over the weekend, earning $54m. FYI, that's only about $500k short of what its 2014 prequel did in its opening week. The prequel closed 2014 with $151m, landing it at #19 for the top grossing films of the year. Will 2015 be a bigger year for the series? Only time will tell.

1. The Divergent Series: Insurgent (Lionsgate) $54m 3,875/$13,942 avg. (debut)
2. Cinderella (Buena Vista) $34m 3,848/$8,964 avg. (week 2)
3. Run All Night (Warner Bros.) $5.1m 3,171/$1,613 avg. (week 2)
4. The Gunman (Open Road) $5.0m 2,816/$1,779 avg. (debut)
5. Kingsman: The Secret Service (Fox) $4.6m 2,223/$2,069 avg. (week 6)

It's also worth noting that Bleecker Street's Danny Collins, which stars Al Pacino as an aging rock star who sees his life change after receiving an undelivered letter from John Lennon, debuted at #30 with an average of $14,640 in just five theaters.
