After months of rumors about a new album, Drake hit the world upside the head with a one-two love slap Thursday, releasing an artsy short film called “Jungle” then just hours later, unleashing a new mixtape called If You're Reading This, It's Too Late.
When the film hit, social media went nuts wondering if this was a precursor to Drake’s long-awaited 4th studio album Views From the 6—a project already announced by the Canadian rapper back in July—confirmed in the bars of the Grammy nominated anthem “0-100/The Catch Up” when he said, “We already got spring 2015 poppin’… Not to mention me droppin’.”
However, the latest music release does appear to be a mixtape not an album and is officially via Cash Money, so y’all just got gifted by OVO for Valentine’s Day, bitches. It was available for stream all night on livemixtapes.com but has since been pulled down, now it's for sale at iTunes and Amazon. There’s still a new Drake album in the pipe, but in the meantime enjoy seventeen smokin’ new bangers including includes features from Lil Wayne, PARTYNEXTDOOR and Travi$ Scott.
The mini-movie is not to be missed either. Don’t forget, this kid is a talented actor. Directed by Karim Huu Do the 15-minute piece is a dramatic, existential journey through Drake’s life, from his beginnings as a child growing up in Toronto to hanging with his crew and dealing with the odd trappings of superstardom. The movie informs the new music; in the very first scene of "Jungle," you hear Drake say to his limo driver, “The whole energy out here, it’s just changing, you know? It’s getting dark man, quick.” Segue to Track #2 on the mixtape, a song called “Energy” where he raps, “I got enemies/got a lotta enemies/got a lotta people tryin to drain me of my energy/."
If You're Reading This It's Too Late is prominently displayed on the iTunes homepage, but it has yet to appear on the chart.
