What Viewers Pointed Their Phones at ... and Paid for

The nice people at Shazam have furnished some thought-provoking data from Grammy night. The first graphic below breaks down the moments that prompted the most tags. First and foremost, the ELO-Ed collaboration seems to have introduced scores of peeps to the sweeping pop-rock classic "Mr. Blue Sky," to which Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman swayed together.

As anticipated, other key performances prompted significant curiosity among viewers, many of whom presumably don't follow the Pop charts all year long. But even they seem to already know "Stay With Me" and "Happy," which didn't make this Top 10. And another classic-rock tune, "Highway to Hell" by show openers AC/DC, clearly made an impression.

Now let's take a look at the songs that converted from tags to purchases.

Once again (as the iTunes charts bear out), certain performers benefited hugely, even if they didn't take home awards. And the kids are excited about this ELO. Annie Lennox and Hozier made both halves of their segment count, anything involving Kanye blew up, Adam and Gwen sold that Maroon song effectively, and comely numbers from familiar stars like Madonna and Katy Perry turned curiosity into covetousness. And it seems Juanes, already a megastar in the Spanish-speaking world, made a bunch of new friends.
