box office

DRAGON SLAYS BOX OFFICE: On the first weekend when many theater owners introduced sizable ticket price increases, How to Train Your Dragon took in $43.3 million at the domestic box office, pushing Alice in Wonderland to #2 with $17.3 million, according to studio estimates. Hot Tub Time Machine earned $13.6 million for the #3 spot. Dragon becomes the year's third 3-D box-office hit, after Alice and Avatar, pulling in 68% of its revenue from theaters showing it in 3-D. But the debut, which fell short of industry expectations, proves there are limits to how much 3-D traffic theaters can handle. "There's no question there are not enough screens yet," Disney's Chuck Viane told the N.Y. Daily News. (3/29a)
