Green Day hits Broadway

GREAT WHITE WAY GOES GREEN: Green Day turned up last night on stage at the Broadway show inspired by American Idiot, and the N.Y. TimesJon Pareles must’ve been tipped off, because he was there to witness the surprise appearance. “The band took the stage right after Thursday’s show as girls in the audience screamed,” Pareles writes. “The cast was onstage, pogoing and singing along; some performers took video of themselves onstage with Green Day. One cast member tried crowd-surfing, traveling about three rows. Armstrong jumped around, stuck out his tongue, and filled in the part of rock-and-roll that’s absent from the Broadway show, encouraging the crowd to sing along. The band play an older song, ‘Basket Case,’ that isn’t part of the show. The crowd squealed anew and shouted the lyrics when bassist Mike Dirnt pointed a microphone their way. Cast members knew them too, cementing some punk-rock credentials. Afterward, a few of them lifted a grinning Armstrong off his feet. (4/23a)
