Weekend box office: Inception

THINKING MAN’S BLOCKBUSTER DELIVERS: Christopher Nolan’s mind-blowing Inception (Warner Bros.) dreamed its way to a robust $60.4 million opening, with enthusiastic word-of-mouth believed to be a major factor. While Inception soared, Disney’s Nicolas Cage-starring, somewhat less cerebral The Sorcerer's Apprentice stumbled, ringing up just $17.4 million for the weekend, to put its five-day total at a meager $24.5 million Here’s the weekend Top 10, according to studio estimates:

1. Inception - $60.4m
2. Despicable Me - $32.73m
3. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice - $17.37m
4. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - $13.5m
5. Toy Story 3 - $11.47m
6. Grown Ups - $10m
7. The Last Airbender - $7.45m
8. Predators - $6.8m
9. Knight and Day - $3.7m
10. Karate Kid - $2.2m

Not in the Top 10, but highly recommended (by us), along with Inception and Toy Story 3, is Lisa Cholodenko’s delightful The Kids Are All Right. (7/19a)
