Elton-Leon LP preview

T FOR TWO: Earlier this week, Elton John, Leon Russell and producer T Bone Burnett invited a few friends and journalists (but not us) to the Village, where the sessions had taken place, for a playback of the piano pounders’ aptly titled joint project The Union, Randy Lewis reports in Pop & Hiss. On hand for the occasion were NARAS head Neil Portnow, KCRW MD Jason Bentley, keyboardist/composer James Newton Howard and some of the musicians who played on the album, including drummers Jim Keltner (who played in Russell’s band in the ’70s) and Burnett regular Jay Bellerose. According to the reporter, the tracks bore touches of country, blues and gospel, woven into some of the most mainstream-sounding rock of Burnett’s left-of-center career. We can’t wait to hear this record, which hits Oct. 19 on Decca. (7/23a)
