ROOM FOR SQUARES: John Mayer closed his Twitter account on Monday, leaving north of 3.7 million followers in the dark about what he’s eating, drinking, thinking and inking. Like a growing number of social networkers, Mayer has made his primary forum the stylish, image-laden Tumblr. There you’ll find the photo above, which is captioned, “A Self Portrait of The Artist Three Days Before His Metaphoric Retirement.” And there Mayer has posted his explanation for jettisoning the site he’d helped define: “I had 3.3 million Twitter followers back in April when I announced that I’d be predominantly posting on Tumblr, a site that takes all of 25 seconds to sign up for,” he wrote in part. “Five months later I have just passed 50,000 followers, a fraction of my Twitter base… I will leave the opining up to you, but I think I made the right move. I now have an even larger Tumblr addiction.” He also used Tumblr to post a goodbye “tweet” to his followers: “Time to (try to) disappear for a while. Love you guys. A lot.” (9/15a)
