Who's play in that TWC spot?

’HEADS UP: If you you’re a Time Warner Cable subscriber, you’ve been hammered in recent weeks by an insistently rockin’ riff in the provider’s latest 30-second spot, and you may be wondering whether those four engaging guys pictured playing it are a real band. Those guys are the Mommyheads, a smart, musically sophisticated indie band that generated a modest but fervent cult following in the ’90s. Our own Bud Scoppa, a big fan, tried to sign the then-S.F.-based band to Warner Music’s Discovery label but lost out to Todd Sullivan at Geffen (and it’s highly unlikely they would’ve sold any more units had it gone the other way). The Mommyheads reunited earlier this year after being invited to tour Sweden, where they still have a big cult following, after which singer/guitarist Adam Elk (ne Cohen), who’s been making a living composing commercial jingles in his native New York, landed the TWC gig. Just released: Finest Specimens (Dromedary), a 21-track retrospective that draws primarily on the five LPs they put out in the '90s, along with a stunning live version of the classic “Needmore, PA” from the Swedish tour and the sublime new song “When the Sun Breaks.” (11/24a)
