SHAGGS SLAGGED: The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World, a musical about the historically inept all-female rock band once championed, with tongues firmly in cheek, by Lester Bangs and Frank Zappa, opened on Broadway last night to tepid reviews. In the N.Y. Times’, Charles Isherwood dismissed it as “a glum Gypsy for the hippie era… The animating impulse behind The Shaggs is to unleash the spiritual music that soars in the souls of even the tone-deaf among us—as Gypsy certainly did—but the uneven pop-rock score isn’t engaging or exciting enough to bring the point home.” Can’t wait to hear the original cast album.
