AUGMENTED HEAVINESS: Atlanta art-metal band Mastodon has juiced up its upcoming album The Hunter (Reprise, 9/27) with a high-tech value-added element: an interactive augmented reality experience created by L.A.-based outfit Total Immersion. By using a camera on a computer and the album cover art, users can turn themselves into the sculpture that’s pictured on the cover. The deluxe package comes with a DVD that includes music videos, along with something Mastodon calls a “psychedelic visualizer.” For the hardcore a direct-to-fan package is available exclusively from the band’s website. For 50 bucks, you get an insert that triggers a more extensive augmented reality experience that contains additional embedded content, details of which remain mysterious. It also comes with a “lenticular” poster (Google it) of the standard album cover artwork, along with keys to download the first single and two bonus tracks. That is so 2012. (8/5a)
