HOW TWEET IT IS: Breaking its long-time silence on breaking out numbers, Twitter said in a blog entry late last week that it now has 100 million active users. “More than half of them log in to Twitter each day to follow their interests,” the entry stated. “For many, getting the most out of Twitter isn’t only about tweeting: 40% of our active users simply sign in to listen to what’s happening in their world.” In the past, Twitter has been notoriously shy with sharing the number of active users it has, choosing instead to cite the number of registered accounts, a number that included inactive accounts, as mediabistro pointed out. In fact, Twitter is using the same measurement that Facebook uses for its active users—counting those who log in at least once a month. A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to mediabistro that the service gets 100 million monthly log-ins, and that half of those accounts log in once a day. (9/12a)
