EU extends ownership of legacy recordings
SCORE ONE FOR THE STATUS QUO: While a huge legal batter over termination rights on ownership of master recordings is expected to go down in the U.S., the majors have scored a decisive win on the issue in Europe, where a multi-decade extension for legacy recordings was just approved by the European Union. Specifically, EU regulators in Brussels voted last week to extend the term of copyright in sound recordings for an additional 20 years to 70 years from the release of a given record, and the Council of Ministers affirmed it today, Digital Music News reports. The new legislation will also benefit superstar artists who now own their recordings, like the Rolling Stones, as well as those who negotiated higher than normal royalties during their careers.
